About

Hi! I’m Katie. What do you want to know?

How long have I been doing photography? Glad you asked! I fell in love with the art form in high school. The smell of the dark room, developing film, printing my negatives, it was fascinating. I’ve always been a creative spirit and this was just a new medium to explore that I happened to take to really well. I was also a shy introvert and terrified of taking pictures of actual human people so my portfolio from that time is a lot of landscapes and architecture.

Fast forward to 2006 and we got our first digital camera – a little Nikon coolpix point and shoot – weeks before our first kid was born. I never thought I’d switch to digital, or color for that matter, but it was just a way to easily get pictures to send to grandparents the fastest. A little later we splurged on a DSLR and things started to change. I started taking pics of my toddler and her friends. Good pics. I loved doing it too. So much so that my friends encouraged me to start getting people to pay me to take their pics. So in 2009-2010 I started offering my services for a small fee, just to “build my portfolio” and see where it took me. Insert years of parenting, freelancing, imposter syndrome, another kid, more and more satisfied repeat clients, a pandemic, and here we are: The cusp of 2022 and I’m finally in the brainspace to make a proper website.

I grew up in NJ/PA and have a BA in history from Franklin & Marshall College (all those liberal arts probably explains the wordiness of this website!). I’ve been in the DC area since 2000 which I think qualifies me now as a local. I love Wes Anderson movies, typography, mid-centry atomic design, Charley Harper, Saul Bass, Alexander McQueen, film noir, hedgehogs, octopuses (octopi?), Radiohead, and childrens books with excellent illustrations. I hate seafood, Stevie Nicks, aviator glasses, hypocrites, and anything that causes secondhand embarassment.
