It’s taken our house four days to finally settle back into a routine (sort of!). January is thankfully a super light month for photography work and a much needed chance to close up business for the previous year (all that fun administrative stuff). It’s also a chance to sit back and rethink what went right and what I want to change.
Fortunately a lot went right this year but as always, imposter syndrome creeps in – a lot because I don’t run this business like a lot of other photographers do. When I decided to revamp and make a proper website two years ago, I joined a couple photographer forums and holy crap, there’s some crazy stuff going down as “regular best business practices.” Literally heard people complaining that they couldn’t use a clients pics in their portfolio because they didn’t adhere to their minimalistic aesthetic color scheme for that season. Ridiculous. Anyway, I had to quit those groups and trust my gut. The list below showcases a few of my hard and fast beliefs – and the things I don’t do are all things I’ve heard/seen other photographers do as a matter of regular business. Like if you want to meet an hour away at dawn for some incredible sunrise pics I’m game but I’m not going to regularly insist clients (especially families!!) do that.
This fall I’ll be hitting 15 years in business and I continue to be proud and thankful for how my work has grown and how supportive my clients have been. And my gut, despite my brain’s best work to sabotage me, has proved me well this far. Keep posted here for some ideas and pivots I have in mind. All good, don’t worry 😉
